What is a BiPAP machine?
BiPAP is a form of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) therapy used to facilitate breathing. They are extensively used in hospitals and can also be available at home. The home ones are compact and feature a tube that connects to a mask which is worn over your nose and mouth.
It has the main function to push the air pressure inside the lungs. Depending on the settings, this opens the lungs, improving the level of oxygen in the blood and decreasing the carbon dioxide.
The name ‘Bilevel’ is given due to the fact that it has two air pressure settings. It can treat the conditions like-
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
- obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS)
- obstructive sleep apnea
- central sleep apnea
- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
